Su Shi Straw sandals can't bring fame, One leaf in an empty boat,                An insignificant node.  An exile I lie listening to midnight rain,         Silent,               Still,  No lamp glow...  Desolate...

Yèyǔ Sù Jìngxíngyuàn

Mángxié bútà lì míng chǎng, Yī yè xū zhōu jì miǎo máng. Línxià duì chuáng tīng yè yǔ, Jìng wú dēnghuǒ zhào qīliáng.

Notes: We have not located Jingxing Courtyard but think it was in Danzhou. It is not often that Su Shi expresses such desolate pessimism, but exiled at the end of the world, at midnight, with a tropical rain pounding on the palm thatched roof, with his oil lamp extinguished, can he be criticized for this mood?
