Crossing the Han River near Xiangyang
Crossing the Han River
|
Song Zhiwen 656-712
Beyond the mountain range
no word from home,
Already many seasons gone.
Nearing my home town
my heart thumps,
Cowardly
don't dare ask
a villager
if all is well at home.

Jìn xiāng qīng gèng qiè,

Notes: Song Zhiwen was returning from exile in the far south, beyond the Plum Pass in Guangdong, when he crossed the Han River, somewhere between Wuhan and Xiangyang. Not knowing if his family was alive or well, he didn't have the courage to ask a villager who passed by.
