it is clear the Chinese don't quite know how to deal with this incongruous French colonial building that stands on the site of the former 照德臺 Zhaodetai, the symble of Chinese authority over Vietnam. When the French thought that they had the right to their sphere of influence over southern China, they ignored the border between Vietnam and China and plunked their symble of authority down here. Today in July, 2006, there is a sign saying 'Faguolou' and it is part of the tourist attractions at the Youiguan, Friendship Pass.
