In China's Qing Dynasty Kumemura was a small village beside Naha. The Qing Emperor Kangxi 'donated' 36 Chinese families from Fuzhou, Fujian, to the Ryukyu court to disseminate Chinese crafts and culture. Thereafter many of the Ryukyuan intellectuals and poets were descendants of these Chinese families.

Today the Fukushuen, Fujian Gardens, are located in Kumemura, commemorating the long term relationship between the Ryukyus and China.
