Small valley in the south slope of Hagurosan.

May 20, 2007
Dismal cold rain this morning. Four layers of summer shirts plus a hat keeps me warn enough. With my umbrella I start down the stone steps through rows of huge ancient cypress which line both sides of the trail. I'm totally alone in this wet morning. Wet leaves glissen with spring green.

Off to the left is a path leading to the 南谷 Nangu, South Valley, where Basho visited with the master of the temple that once stood here. Nothing remains except the an expanse of flat land, a few foundation stones and one or two ponds. It is a beautiful spot for a temple, half way down the mountain, sheltered by the mountain to the north and facing south and the morning sun.
