Yokohama's 'foreigner' shopping street goes back to the days in the late 1800's and early 1900's when Yokohama was the main port for Tokyo and where most of the foreigners lived. Today it is a hollow shell, an amusement street where Japanese can go on weekends to feel they are together with foreigners. May 14, 2007 Motomachi, the foreigner's shopping street is all new, only two or three shops still the same names; Poppy an English style haberdashery where I bought my first ascot in 1955, Nakaya the expensive purveror of Western delicacies, chocolates, Prince of Wales tea, Scandanavian cookies, canned corned beef and spam (!), and the Hill Drugstore. The German Bakery is long gone along with its delicious chocolate rum balls!
