Taihua Temple was constructed in 1306 of the Yuan dynasty. From then into the Ming dynasty it was a temple of the Mu family 沐氏 , a powerful family in Kunming. The unusual relationship between Taihua Temple and the Mu family was debated during Qianlong 乾隆 period of the Qing Dynasty and a decision was made that the Mu ancestors were to be continuously worshiped by Taihua Temple. 太华寺又称"佛严寺"，位于太华山上，居西山群蜂之中，森林茂盛，为西山最高峰，海拔2500米。它始建于元大德十年(公元1306年)，为梁王甘麻刺创建。云南禅宗的"开山第一祖"玄鉴(又名无照)常在此讲经说法。后改称为太华寺，被明黔国公沐英奉为家庙。明末被毁，清康熙二十六年(公元1687年)，总督范承勋重建。大悲阁在咸丰年间遭战火烧毁， 光绪九年(公元1883年)又重建。 登临太华寺，可谓一步一景，回望滇池，但见碧波万顷，四际烟洛，水天茫茫，一派诗情画意。寺内的缥缈楼和一碧万顷楼都是眺望滇他湖光山色的绝佳之处。
