This temple on 南湖島 Nanhudao, South Island in 昆明湖 Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace has a more formal name, 廣潤靈雨祠 Guǎngrùnlíngyǔcí, which someone translated roughly as Temple of Timely Rains and Extensive Moisture. In the Qing Emperor Qian Long's reign, 1736-1795, the Kunming Lake was expanded but his island was retained and the temple was built to pray for rain. Until the end of the dynasty Empress Dowager Cixi would stop here to pray for rain before coninuing to her quarters in the Hall of Happiness and Longevity.
