Built 1,600 years or more ago, The Tanzhesi is one of China's oldest Buddhist temples. It is named for the pool 潭 high on the mountain above it called the 龍潭, and for a grove of 'three-brisle cudrania trees 柘 (whatever they are!), which grew on the mountain slope. An hour's drive west of Beijing City center it is beautifully sequestered on a mountain slope in the Western Hills. Its peacefully quiet pagoda forest 塔林 is green with ancient trees.
