On a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi is this lovely small memorial temple to General Tran Hung Dao (Tran Thanh Tong), who three times defeated Mongols at Bach Dang River, using iron tipped wooden stakes in the tidal area. He placed these stakes at an angle inland at low tide. When the Mongol ships arrived he lured them into the river at high tide. When the tide receeded the Mongol ships were impaled and incapacitated. A few of these ancient stakes are on view in the Hanoi History Museam.
