Tran Quang Trieu was born in 1286 in Tuc Mac village, Thien Troung district, Ha Nam Ninh Province. He was a nephew of the great Tran Dynasty Grand Commander Tran Hung Dao and bother in law of King Tran Anh Tong. Appointed to the court he excelled in both literary and military fields, leading troops to pacify border areas.

On the death of his wife he asked to be allowed to retire to his retreat of Bich Dong near Quynh Lam Pagoda in Quang Ninh Province. There, together with his collegues, he founded the Bich Dong Poetry Group. In 1324 King Tran Minh Tong asked him to return to court and he died shortly thereafter. His untimely death saddened his friends and they edited hid poems pothumously into the Cuc Duong Collection. Of this collection only 11 poems survive today.
