Huyen Quang's given name was Ly Dai To. He was born in 1254 in Van Tai village, Nam Sach district, Lang Giang Province. A prodigy, he easily passed the the regional examination in 1274 at the age of 20. A year later he was the first laureate of the third examination. He was appointed to a position in the court, but shortly decided to retire and become a monk.

On Yen Tu Mountain he became a disciple of King Tran Nhan Tong, founder of the Bamboo Forest School of Zen. Later he became the Third Patriarch of the School. He was one of the great poets of his time. Twenty four of his poems have survived.
