Tue Trung Thuong Sy's given name was Tran Tung. He was the elder brother of the famous Marshall Tran Hung Dao. He fought against the three Mongolian Yuan Dynasty invasions of 1257-1258, 1285 and 1287-1288. After the wars he served briefly he served as a provincial governor but soon retired to his Dong Chan Trang, Bamboo Grove School of Zen, and spent the remainder of his life practicing Buddhism.
He as the Buddhist teacher of King Tran Nhan Tong, who was the founded of the first indigenous Vietnamese branch of Buddhism. Although a lay practicioner, not a monk, Tue Trung Thuong Sy was widely repected for his Buddhist learning.
