A native of Henan, Ruan Ji was a musician and iconoclastic poet. He witnessed the decline of the Wei Dynasty with a 'violent distain for politics.' Escaped into the privacy of what was called 清談 Qingtan, or Pure Conversation, which took place in a bamboo grove outside the capital of Luoyang. From this he became known as one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove.
