A Native of Fanyang in Hebei, Lu was a recognized poet of the early Tang. He was assigned to a military post in Xindu, west of Chengdu in Sichuan, but was forced to resign due to ill health that plagued him for the rest of his life. He retired to Taiposhan and studied Daoism. Consuming many exotic herbs, and perhaps a little mercury there, his hands and feet were crippled. He moved to Zhucushan in Henan and spent the remainder of his life in his retreat by the Ying river. Sick and unhappy with life under the Empress Wu he drowned himself in the Ying River
