Hou Fangyu was caught up in the Ming-Qing cataclism He was just 26 years old when the Qing army took his home town Shangqiu. He refused to serve the Manchu conquerors and wandered for two years in Jiangnan. Two years later at the age of 28 he returned home and lived in seclusion until his death at the young age of 37. He named his studio the Hall of Great Remorse signifying his opposition to the Manchu. He wrote many poems and is considered one of the best early Qing writers.
