We first came to know Fan Yanqiao as the writer of the hit 1930's tune Ye Shanghai, Shanghai Nights. This tune sung by the star Zhou Xuan, came from the movie 西廂記 Xixiangji, Tales of the West Chamber, for which he wrote the screenplay. Zhou Xuan stared in this movie.

He was also a wrote the 1923 satire "A Writer's Tribulations," in which a writer, Shakespeare East, discovers that literary talent can be detrimental to one's well-being when his readers object to his portrayals of characters that they feel resemble themselves too closely. This story can be found in Stories for Saturday, a collection of early 20th century Chinese short stories translated by Timothy Wong, University of Hawaii Press.
