One of many important poets in the last decades of the eighth century, a close friend of Han Yu, Meng Jiao was recognized as a good poet during his lifetime. He took the jinshi examination in 791, the same year as Han Yu, but failed. Later, after several more failed attempts he finally did pass at the age of 50. But he did not obtain an important posting and lived the rest of his life in unhappy retirement in Luoyang. His poems are filled with intense bitterness, a bizarre imagination and violent imagery.
