Notes:

Born in Quanzhou, Fujian, 雪峰 ( 義存), Xuefeng Yicun left his family and entered the Yujiansi in Putian, not far from his home. From there he traveled and practiced at temples in Beijing, Hunan, where he studied under Deshan, and then eventually back to Fujian to the 象骨山, Elephant Bone Mountain, to become abbot of the 崇聖寺 Chóngshèngsì, Sublime Worthy Monastery. Later the name of this monastery was changed to the 雪峰寺 Xuěfēngsì, Snow Peak Temple.
