Commiserating with Gentleman-in-Waiting Wang on Dongting Lake
Zhang Wei 720-770

Through Dngting Lake in the middle of fall
The waters of the Xiao and Xiang flow north
But home is a thousand-mile dream away
And a guest greets dawn with sorrow
There's no need to open a book
Far better to visit an inn
Chang'an and Luoyang are full of old friends
But when will we join them again

Tóng Wáng Zhēngjūn Dòngtíng Yǒu Huái
Zhāng Wèi 720-770

Bāyuè Dòngtíng qiū,
Xiāoxiāng shuǐ běi liú.
Huán jiā wàn lǐ mèng,
Wéi kè wǔ gēng chóu.
Bú yòng kāi shū zhì,
Piān yí shàng jiǔlóu.
Gùrén Jīng Luò mǎn,
Hérì fù tóng yóu.

Notes:
From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.

Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
