Recording My Thoughts While Traveling at Night
Du Fu 712-770

A shore of thin reeds in light wind
A tall boat alone at night
Stars hang over the barren land
The moon rises out of the Yangtze
How could writing ever lead to fame
I quit my post due to illness and age
Drifting along what I am like
A solitary gull between Heaven and Earth

Lǚ Yè Shū Huái
Dù Fǔ 712-770

Xì cǎo wēi fēng àn,
Wēi qiáng dú yè zhōu.
Xīng chuí píng yě kuò,
Yuè yǒng dà jiāng liú.
Míng qǐ wénzhāng zhù,
Guān yīng lǎo bìng xiū.
Piāopiāo hé suǒ sì,
Tiān dì yī shā ōu.

Translator: Red Pine-Bill Porter 赤松

Notes:
From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.

Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
