On Climbing Zongchi Pagoda
|
Cen Shen 715-770
I climbed a pagoda that touched the highest heaven
I stood at the edge of the sun
I could see ten thousand courtyards below
And the dismal smoke of Wuling
Beyond the railing the Qinling looked low
The Wei seemed small in the window
If I had known such detachment before
I would have served the golden immortal

Kǎn wài dī Qínlǐng,
Chuāng zhōng xiǎo Wèichuān.
Zǎo zhī qīng jìng lǐ,
Cháng yuàn fèng Jīnxiān.

Notes: From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.
Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
