Looking for a Recluse without Success
Jia Dao 779-843

Below the pines I ask the boy
He says his master had gone to find herbs
He's somewhere on this mountain
But the clouds are too thick to know where

Xún Yǐnzhě Bú Yù
Jiǎ Dǎo 779-843

Sōng xià wèn tóngzǐ,
Yán shī cǎi yào qù.
Zhǐ zài cǐ shān zhōng,
Yún shēn bù zhī chǔ.

Translator: Red Pine-Bill Porter 赤松

Notes:
From the book Poems of the Masters, China's Classic Anthology of Tang and Song Dynasty verse. One of the best, if not "the best", books of general translations of Chinese poetry. Wonderfully detailed notes on each poem and all poems are displayed in the original Chinese.

Translated by Red Pine, published by Copper Canyon Press.
