Floating on the Ying River

Su Shi 1036-1101 By nature I enjoy viewing water; When assigned to Ying, I was overjoyed. In the ten days since assuming my post I have spent nine on the river bank. My clerks smirk and murmur together, "The prefect is old and foolish." Actually I am not foolish, The flowing waters have a lovely appearance. Encircle the city over ten miles, They are neither hurried nor sluggish. The upper reaches are straight and pure, The lower are widing and rippled. In a painted boad I lean over the bright mirror; Smiling, I ask"Who are you?" Suddenly my image grows scales, Blurring my whiskers and eyebrows. It spreads out to form a hundred East Slopes, In a moment it is at hand as before. Is the river playing tricks on me, Teasing me this way? Music and gowns, aromas and flavors These invert and befuddle common fellows. Water, too, is a thing of amusement, But it does not grind down or taint. Zhao, Chen, and the two Ouyangs All are teachers of devas and men. Each is able to observe the numinous, Together we chant poems on floating on the Ying.

Fàn Yǐng

Sū Shì 1036-1101 Wǒ xìng xǐ lín shuǐ, Dé Yíng yì shèn qí. Dào guān shí rì lái, Jiǔ rì hé zhī méi. Lì mín xiào xiāng yǔ, Shǐjūn lǎo ér chī. Shǐjūn shí bù chī, Liú shuǐ yǒu lìng zī. Rào jùn shí yú lǐ, Bù shǐ yì bù chí. Shàng liú zhí ér qīng, Xià liú qǔ ér yí. Huà chuán fǔ míng jìng, Xiào wèn rǔ wéi shuí. Hūrán shēng língjiǎ, Luàn wǒ bìn yǔ méi. Sàn wéi bǎi Dōngpō, Qǐnkè fù zài zī. Cǐ qǐ shuǐ bó xiàng, Yú wǒ xiāng yú xì. Diāndǎo xuàn xiǎo ér, Děng shì ér xìwù. Shuǐ zhōng shǎo líng zī, Zhào Chén liǎng Ōuyáng. Tóng cān tiān rén shī. Guān miào gè yǒu dé, Gòng fù fàn Yǐng shī.
