On Hearing Imperial Forces Have Recovered The Northeast
|
Dù Fǔ 712-770
Beyond Swords,
we suddenly learn they regained North Thorn!
When first I heard,
falling tears flooded down my robes.
Turning to see my wife & children--
where is there any woe!
Wildly roll up my verses & books--
nearly crazed with joy.
In broad daylight sing out loud,
indulge yourself with wine!
Green springtime will escort us,
just right for going home.
Once through the Ophid Gorge,
we'll thread Witch Gorge,
Then straight down to Xiangyang,
and on toward Loyang!

Notes: At this time Du Fu hoped to return home to Changan and Luoyang, and envisioned the joys of the return trip. But his hopes were in vain, for continued warfare closed the roads home and he never did return.
