Line Written on Wall of Donghu Village

Xin Qiji (1140-1207) Wild pear blossoms start falling again, so soon, the Qingming festival over. The cruel eastern wind, for no reason, interrupts a traveler's dream. I awake, the brocade curtain devastatingly cold. Once, she held the drink to me on the winding river bank, and we bade farewell to each other under a weeping willow tree with my horse tethered to it. Now, the pavilion deserted, there is no trace of her, only the swallows twittering about bygones She's been seen, people say, east of the bustling thoroughfare, behind the curtain, still as graceful as the new moon. Old regrets run like the endless spring water. New griefs pile up like the clouds over the mountains. If we were going to meet again, at a banquet, to tell her all this would be as impossible as to pluck the flower from a mrror. She would say, perhaps, How white your hair has grown!

Niàn Nú Jiāo

Xīn Qìjí 1140-1207 Yětánɡ huā luò, Yòu cōnɡ cōnɡ ɡuò le, Qīnɡmínɡ shíjié. Chǎn dì dōngfēnɡ qī kè mènɡ, Yì zhěn yúnpínɡ hán qiè. Qū àn chí shānɡ, Chuíyánɡ jì mǎ, Cǐ dì cénɡ qīnɡ bié. Lóu kōnɡ rén qù, Jiù yóu fēiyàn nénɡ shuō. Wén dào qǐmò dōnɡtóu, Xínɡrén cénɡ jiàn, Lián dǐ xiān xiān yuè. Jiùhèn chūnjiānɡ liú bú jìn, Xīnhèn yúnshān qiān dié. Liào dé mínɡzhāo, Zūn qián chónɡ jiàn, Jìnɡ lǐ huā nán zhé. Yě yīnɡ jīnɡ wèn: Jìnlái duō shǎo huáfà?

Notes: Where is 東流村 Dongliucun? We don't know. there are a number of Dongliu Villages in China, in Henan, Liaoning and Jiangsu. We guess it is the Tongliu near Changzhou in Jiangsu Province. [大意]野海棠花飄落，又匆匆過了清明時節，東風欺淩著路上的行客，竟把我的短夢驚醒。涼氣向我的孤枕雲屏襲來，我感到陣陣寒意。在那彎曲的河岸邊，我曾與佳人一起舉杯飲酒，垂柳下把馬兒拴繫，曾在此地與佳人離別。如今人去樓空，衹有往日的燕子依然棲息，能敍述往日的歡樂，聽說在繁華街道的東面，行人曾在簾下見過她如新月般纖纖的秀足，舊日的情事如東流的春江，無盡無休，新的遺憾又像雲山一層層添來，綿延不絕。假如有一天，我又和她在酒宴上再相遇，她也將會像鏡中之花，再不能採摘。她會驚訝地問我，頭髮為什麼變得這樣花白？
