Vegetable stall in Huizhou, little changed since Dongpo's day.
Ten Years (To the Tune of Jiangchengzi)
|
Su Shi (1037-1101)
Ten years, ten years:nothingness
between life and death.
I try not to think, but I forget not.
The solitary grave
thousands of miles away.
Where else can I tell
the sorrow of my heart?
You would not recognize me if we met:
my face dust-covered,
my temples frost white.
Last night
the dream brought me back
to our old home, where,
by the small window,
you were applying your make-up.
We gazed at each other
in silence
our tears flowing.
It must be the same heart-breaking scene
year after year,
the bright moon night
the short pine hill.

Notes: Su passed the 10th anniversary of the death of his wife in exile in Huizhou, Guangdong Province. He wrote this poem in remembrance.
