Pounding Clothes
         Du fu 712-770

I know you won't return from wars,
In autumn I rub clean the washing block.
The bitter moon's cold already arrived,
Already long separated from you.

Resigned to endlessly pound your clothes,
Send them to you at the far desert border.
Worn out, my woman's strength exhausted,
Can you hear the pounding in the empty air?

Dù Fǔ 712-770

Yì zhī róng bù fǎn,
Qiū zhì shì qīng zhēn.
Yǐ jìn kǔhán yuè,
Kuàng jīng cháng béi xīn.

Nìng cí dǎo yī juàn,
Yī jì sāi tán shēn.
Yòngjìn guī zhōng lì,
Jūn tīng kōng wài yin.
