The Yungang Shiku, together with the Mogao Shiku in Dunhuang, and the Maijishan Shiku in Gansu, is one of the major Buddhist cave sites in China. Work on these cave sculptures started when the Northern Wei Dynasty selected its capital in nearby Datong. The last sculptures were completed in the Qing Dynasty. Over 50,000 sculptures were carved from the limestone cliffs of Wuzhoushan.
