This stage was built in the Qing Imperial Palace in 1776, at the time of the American Revolution. Elaborate performances of Peking opera were performed here. The stage has trap doors in floors and ceilings, capstans and wheels enabling dramatic entrances and exits of supernatural beings, ghosts and demons. It faces the Yueshilou, where the last empress dowager Ci Xi, an adict of Peiking opera, sat for hours and hours absorbing the performances.
