Dazu County, located 163 km to the west of Chongqing. Work on the Dazu Rock Carvings began in 650 in the Tang Dynasty and continued until the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Dazu Grottos are scattered on the mountains of Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shizhuanshan and Shimenshan. Baoding Grotto, 15 kilometres northeast of Dazu county seat, is the largest and best preserved site.
