Named for three scholars on their way to take the imperial examinations. During a violent storm they took refuge here. Later, having successfuly passed the exams, they donated funds to build a sanctuary here. But more than likely it was already a place of worship for boatsmen traveling up and down the Great River, the Changjiang.
