Portuguese officials, traders, missionaries and sailors all arrived in Old Goa by ship, debarked on the south bank of the Mandavi River and walked, or were carried if the were important visitors, through this archway to the town of Goa. Today in January, 2007, it is rather forlorn. Nowadays most visitors arrive by bus from Panaji, and only a few local tourists come by ferry from the north side of the river.
